Use Item Codes to identify selections in your project and connect them to locations on a floor plan or schedule. You can enter Item Codes manually on every Gather plan. If your plan includes Auto Tagging, Gather can generate them for you.
Item Codes were previously called Item Tags. The name changed to make their purpose clearer.
Before You Start
Workspace owners and super admins can configure the account-level Auto Tagging default.
Manual Item Codes are available on every plan.
Legacy plans (Solo, Studio, and Firm) and Spec Lite use manually managed Item Codes.
Spec Pro also includes Auto Tagging.
An account-level change applies to projects created afterward. Change the Item Code settings inside an existing project when you want to update that project.
Understand An Item Code
An Item Code is a short identifying code attached to a selection. For example, LT-PEN-LOB-01 can identify the first lighting pendant in the lobby.
An Item Code can include:
Schedule code, such as
LTfor lightingType code, such as
PENfor pendantArea code, such as
LOBfor lobbySequence number, such as
01
You can choose a dash, dot, or underscore to separate the parts of the Item Code.
Set The Default For New Projects
If your plan includes Auto Tagging:
Open your account menu and select Settings.
Select Classification.
Select Item Codes.
Choose the Schedule, Type, Area, and sequence components you want to include.
Choose the separator and minimum number of sequence digits.
Turn on Auto Tagging if you want Gather to generate Item Codes automatically.
These settings become the default for projects created afterward. Existing projects do not change automatically.
Change Item Code Settings For An Existing Project
If Auto Tagging is available for the project:
Open the project.
Open Project Settings.
Select Item Codes.
Update the Item Code structure or Auto Tagging setting.
Choose whether to apply the new structure to the selections already in the project.
Turning on Auto Tagging at the project level can generate Item Codes for existing selections. Review the confirmation carefully before applying the change.
Manage Item Codes Manually
You can type or edit an Item Code directly on a selection. This remains available whether or not your plan includes Auto Tagging.
If you manually change an automatically generated Item Code, Gather keeps your custom value for that selection. If the value already exists in the project, Gather warns you so you can choose the next sequence number or keep the duplicate intentionally.
Use Item Codes Across Multiple Areas
When the same selection belongs to more than one Area, its Item Code remains the same across those Areas unless Area Codes are included in the project's Item Code structure.
Troubleshooting
Problem | What To Check |
You do not see the Item Codes settings tab | Confirm that your plan includes Auto Tagging and that you are a workspace owner or super admin. You can still manage an individual Item Code manually. |
Existing projects did not change after you updated account settings | Account settings are defaults for new projects. Open Project Settings and update Item Codes for the existing project. |
Gather reports a duplicate Item Code | Choose the next sequence number or keep the duplicate if the same code is intentional. |
An Item Code does not match the expected Area | Check whether Area Codes are included and confirm the Area's code in project settings. |
