Each time you visit a website, your web browser (e.g., Chrome) first checks for the existence of one of two digital certificates: a Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate. These indicate two essential things.

  • First, they confirm the website's identity, affirming that the website is who it says it is.

  • Second, they verify that the information on the website—and any data you share with it—will be secure and encrypted. Encryption ensures that the information you share, whether a credit card number or home address, will not be intelligible if intercepted.

You can tell if Gather has a valid certificate by clicking on the small padlock to the left of the URL or by looking for "HTTPS"—not "HTTP"—at the front of the website link. See the sample below.

So Why Did I Get Rerouted to This Page?

Sometimes you might not even know where to begin if you see a "your connection is not private" error when you log in here. Below, we'll explain why this error may appear on your screen and how to fix it.

From our experience, this error typically originates from two things:

  • A user-side issue (your browser, computer, OS, network settings/WIFI)

  • Problem with the certificate on the website (e.g., expired or wrong domain), but don't worry! Gather's certificate is valid, so we'll cross this off the list! ❌💃

Here are some recommendations and things to check to fix the error:

  1. Try Reloading the Page

  2. Try in Incognito Mode

  3. Try Other Browsers, e.g. Safari.

  4. Manually Proceed (Unsafe)

  5. Are You in a Public WIFI? Consider What Wifi is in Use. *Note: This is Important!

  6. Check Your Computer's Date and Time

  7. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies

  8. Disable Antivirus Temporarily

  9. Update Your Operating System

  10. Restart Your Computer, WIFI, or Network Settings.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to fix or bypass the "Your connection is not private" error message.
