Add Design Fees to Your Budget

Charge your design fee as a markup on each selection or as a separate line in your budget.

Written by Scottie Elliott

There are two ways to include your design fee in a Gather budget: a markup on each selection, or a separate line under Design Fees. Budgets are available on the Core Plus plan.

Choose How You Charge

  • Markup on each selection: you set a markup in each selection's pricing. Those markups add up in the view-only Product Markup row under Design Fees in your budget.

  • A separate design fee: you add your own row under Design Fees, either as a percentage of your items or as a lump sum.

Note: If you use both, your client pays a markup on each selection plus the separate fee. Use both only if you mean to charge both.

Add a Markup to Each Selection

  1. Open the selection.

  2. Go to the Pricing tab.

  3. Enter the Markup.

You can also enter a default markup when you create a project with Manual Setup.

Add a Design Fee Row

  1. Open your project's Budgets tab.

  2. Under Design Fees, add a new row.

  3. Choose a category, like Product Markup or Design Exploration.

  4. Enter a lump sum or a percentage of your items.

Good to Know

  • Percentage rows: a percentage-of-items row recalculates as you add selections to the Working Budget, so you can see the full fee once all your selections are in.

  • Fixed fees: to record a fee that isn't based on your selections, use a lump sum instead of a percentage.

  • Categories: Design Exploration is one of the default design fee categories. You can rename categories in settings, so you may see different names.

  • Actuals: design fees don't appear in Actuals, because Actuals only come from purchase orders. Bill design fees from your accounting system.
